Lost Lives, New Worlds: Unlocking the Story of the 1650 Scottish Soldiers Buried on Palace Green in Durham, England

In November 2013, archaeologists discovered the mass grave of Scottish prisoners of war from the 1650 Battle of Dunbar on the grounds of Durham Cathedral in Durham England. These men were brothers-in-arms of the Scottish prisoners transported to Saugus Iron Works in 1651. Dr. Christopher Gerrard will discuss how archaeologists and historians unraveled a 350 year old mystery and uncovered the voices of these lost soldiers.

Dr. Christopher Gerrard is a Professor of Archaeology at Durham (UK) and the team leader for the Scottish Soldiers Project. ‘Lost Lives, New Voices’ in 2018. He also was a designer of the exhibition currently at Saugus Iron Works.
