Old Burying Point/Charter Street Cemetery
Landmarks, Museums & Attractions
Salem’s oldest cemetery, founded in 1637, and final resting place for several notable Salem residents.
Located directly behind this cemetery is the Witch Trial Memorial. Open to the public from dawn till dusk, we ask that visitors treat the graves with respect and appreciation due to their age and solemnity.
Old Burying Point will be closed for extended periods of time in 2018 for improvements, beginning November 8, 2018.
In advance of planned restoration work in the historic Charter Street Cemetery in Salem, archaeologists will begin archeological field work on the site where proposed restoration of existing pathways, installation of lighting, and new plantings will occur. This archaeological field work will begin on Thursday, November 8, 2018 and is expected to last until Friday, November 16, 2018, weather permitting. During this time, the Cemetery will be closed to the public.
The project will begin by marking the property with site flags and/or paint and may include placing protective barriers around some of the tombs and headstones. Fieldwork is weather dependent and may extend longer than the anticipated closure period. Public access to the cemetery will be restricted during this phase of the project.
This project was funded in part with Community Preservation Act Funds and a Massachusetts Cultural Council Facilities Fund Grant.
