6 Ice Cream Shops to Try in Salem, Massachusetts

Summer in Salem, Massachusetts comes with new ice cream to try around every corner! From rich hot fudge sundaes to coconut milk-based vegan treats, we’re sharing some of our favorite places to cool off with something sweet in Salem.

Maria’s Sweet Somethings, 26 Front Street

Maria’s Sweet Somethings is the perfect spot to break from shopping along Front Street for something sweet. Ice cream always hits the spot here, with a variety of flavors and soft serve available plus chocolate dipped cones. Maria’s Sweet Somethings is also home to gourmet chocolates and fine candy, plus a variety of Salem souvenirs to bring home with you. Find updates for Maria’s on their Facebook page.

Kakawa Chocolate House, 173 Essex Street

One of Salem’s newest sweet shops, Kakawa Chocolate House is known for their historic drinking chocolate elixirs and artisan chocolates, but especially in the summer months we recommend stopping in for a couple of scoops of ice cream. Their homemade ice cream can be topped with in-house toppings like the hot fudge pictured above, making for one of the most decadent sundaes in Salem. Learn more about their homemade chocolates at KakawaChocolates.com.

Melt, 60 Washington Street

Melt has been a Salem staple offering homemade ice cream made with local ingredients since 2009. The shop often collaborates with other local businesses to create flavors and toppings (think sea salted brownies from Jodi Bee Bakes!) and they sell ice cream by the scoop and by the pint. Melt’s menu features a list of regular flavors alongside rotating ones that have included Minty Blueberry, Pumpkin, Green Tea, Goat Cheese w/ Raspberry Jam, and more! Check their website, meltsalem.com, for a current list of rotating flavors (including a seasonal vegan option), or to order online and pickup at the window.

Popped! Gourmet Popcorn, Pickering Wharf, 84 Wharf Street

Popped! may be all about popcorn, but this Pickering Wharf storefront is a go-to for ice cream as well. Popped! has a large selection of flavors from Richardson’s ice cream, perfect for cooling off on a hot summer day on the wharf. The shop is open year-round, so you can get your ice cream fix in any season, or pick up one of their 100 flavors of popcorn made right onsite. Can’t make it to Salem? Order your favorite popcorn flavors online at poppedstores.com.

Ledger, 125 Washington Street

Ledger’s homemade ice cream selection changes often to match different seasonal desserts, and there is always something sweet for any taste on the menu. While restaurants were only open for takeout earlier this spring, Ledger packed pints for guests to pick up with flavors like matcha mint chip, cherry coke sorbet, banana pudding, strawberry frosted donut, and more. Follow their social media channels to be the first to know about future ice cream pop-ups, and don’t forget to save room for dessert the next time you dine-in. Learn more about Ledger at ledgersalem.com.

Goodnight Fatty, 1 Washington Square

Salem’s late night weekend cookie shop pairs soft serve ice cream with their homemade cookies right across the street from the Salem Witch Museum. Their cookie menu changes weekly (and online ordering and curbside pickup is now available) but for the most indulgent dessert, we recommend getting some ice cream to go with your cookies. And Goodnight Fatty’s soft serve is vegan! Learn more and get ready for the weekend at goodnightfatty.com.
