Jaho Celebrates Over 20 Years in Salem!

Twenty years ago, Jaho began with the simple idea of creating a welcoming place where thoughtfully crafted coffee could bring people together.

Founded in Salem in 2005, Jaho is proud to be the city’s original coffee roaster. What started as one local café has grown to include two locations in Salem, four throughout Greater Boston, and two in Japan. Through that growth, Jaho has remained an independent, family-owned and operated company…and Salem will always remain home to us.

Our Canal Street location at 130 Canal serves as Jaho’s headquarters, housing our coffee roasting operation and commissary alongside the café. Here, you’ll find us roasting coffee almost daily, as well as baking something delicious. The air is often filled with the aromas of freshly roasted coffee and fresh baked goods. It’s here that our team roasts the coffee served across our locations and prepares many of the treats our guests enjoy each day (like our iconic Brazilian flan!). Keeping it all in Salem helps us stay rooted in the community where our story began.

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND “LIVE SLOW.”

Our philosophy can be found in two words: “Live Slow.”

The idea was inspired after a visit to Japan in the early 2000s. Japanese coffee culture provided the original spark for starting Jaho in 2005. In Japan, a visit to a café is typically more than a quick stop for caffeine. It’s a moment that allows for a pause in daily life, which can often feel busy and always “on”. Taking that pause, and living slow, inspires the appreciation for all the details that connect us to the people around.

That spirit has stayed with us throughout the past two decades. Whether someone is meeting a friend, settling in with a book, catching up on work or taking a break while exploring Salem, we want Jaho to feel like a place where they can slow down and enjoy the moment.

A REFRESHING NEW WAY TO COOL DOWN

While coffee will always be at the heart of Jaho, we also love creating drinks for different tastes, moods and seasons. This summer, our Refreshers and Revivers have offered guests a colorful and delicious way to beat the heat.

Refreshers are made with tea or fruit beverages (lemonade or orange juice) and are designed to keep summer feeling fun. Revivers offer that same refreshing experience with added caffeine for those looking for a little extra boost. Whether enjoyed inside the café or taken along for a walk around the historic city, both have been especially welcome during Salem’s hot summer days.

As we look beyond our 20th anniversary, we feel incredibly grateful for the employees, regulars, visitors and neighbors who have made Jaho part of their lives. Salem gave us a start, and we are proud to continue roasting, baking, creating and welcoming guests here every day.
