History and Culture

The Salem Visitor Center, originally known as the Salem Armory, was the headquarters and training facility for the Second Corps of Cadets, tracing back roots to the 18th century. When fire destroyed the building in 1982, the remaining drill shed was converted into the Salem Armory Visitor Center in 1994. At the center, National Park staff and volunteers share information on Essex County and the area’s special historic sites.
