Salem’s history and modern class meet at The Coach House

Salem’s rich history can be found at every corner, even tucked into our local accommodations. The Coach House, located on Lafayette street, is a wonderful combination of this deep history and modern class.

The original owner of The Coach House was local sea captain, Ephraim Augustus Emerton. The property was built in 1879 with the Victorian elegance in mind and future promise in hospitality, as the property would later be converted to an Inn in the 1950’s. This could continue over a 60-year span. With the change in hands in 2022, a vision was formed to recreate the inn to a boutique hotel, and a new-found experience for all guests. With the new ownership of The Coach House, an extensive renovation took place to help fulfill this goal of preserving the essence of the estate’s history, while incorporating modern amenities, contemporary design, and of course, comfort.

The Coach House is an eleven unit, 5,942 square food boutique hotel, less than a mile from downtown Salem. Staying at the Coach House Inn offers guests a tangible connection to Salem’s past. The building’s preservation and continued use as an inn reflect the broader efforts within Salem to maintain and celebrate the city’s historical assets.

The Coach House currently offers several room types which include the classic queen, full suite, queen suite, king suite and luxe queen suite. The rooms all feature full closets, high ceilings, full bathrooms, wireless chargers and smart devices. The rooms are also stocked with plush robes, luxury bedding, an assortment of snacks, bottled water and a Keurig set up with coffee mugs.

Upon first arrival, guests are greeted by a set of stairs and a large glass door. Inside the door is a stunning black penny tile entryway spelling out “Coach House est 1879”. The black and white theme is carried through the entire property, and no detail was left unnoticed. The black runner on the white staircase that leads to the upper floors, the black and white gallery photo wall featuring icons such as Marilyn and Bob Dylan, the black doors with white frames…it all feels very modern, very forward and a bit edgy with rock and roll vibes all at the same time.

One of the only pops of color is on the second floor, in the form of a green mossy wall. Hanging on the patch of green texture is a neon green sign which exclaims “Witch you were here!” in a bold accent. The Coach House is absolutely loaded with stylish and very Instagrammable details and corners. Large gold framed mirrors, little nooks with crystals and books about doorways of Salem…every bit of design is clearly chosen intentionally to fit with the aesthetic of the property and to create an overall experience.

This combination of history and modern aesthetic lends to a unique experience at The Coach House. The reimagining of the property in 2022 brought in fresh energy, luxury amenities and style into a structure that continues to tell the story of Salem’s past. Regardless of if you’re visiting for pleasure, work, attending a conference or traveling with a wedding party, The Coach House leaves no detail unnoticed.
